Tottenham Hotspur and the rest of the quarterfinalists learned their fate

If it seems like only yesterday Tottenham Hotspur were in the 4th round of the Carabao Cup, it is because they were. That fourth-round shoot-out win over London rival Chelsea gave Tottenham a place in the quarterfinals of the competition. Only hours after officially qualifying for Europa League, Spurs were drawn in the EFL competition against Championship side Stoke.

Last season Tottenham Hotspur were eliminated at their first hurdle falling to Colchester United on penalties in the third round. This season Spurs were granted a buy in the third round due to their opponents, Leyton Orient, having a number of players test positive for Covid-19. Following that ‘buy’ due to Orient’s forfeit, Tottenham hosted Chelsea in the middle of a 4 game in 8-day stretch.

After a tough but defensively-minded first-half, Spurs came out and tied the game in the second and went on to win on penalties. Now Tottenham advances to the quarterfinals and take on Stoke. The Potters qualified by winning from the first round up through the fourth.

This holiday season will be filled with Tottenham Hotspur memories

More from Hotspur HQ

Stoke won in the first round on penalties at Blackpool 5-4 after the sides played to a 0-0 draw. The Potters have since won 3 straight games 1-0 in the competition eliminating two Premier League sides, Wolverhampton Wanders and Aston Villa along the way.

Stoke along with Brentford are the only two non-Premier League sides left and Brentford hosts Newcastle.

All four matches, which are a single leg only this season will be played the week of December 21, since the Christmas/New Years’ calendar is so sparse of football.

The semi-finals are also single-legged affairs and will be played the week of January 4, 2021. Here is the complete quarterfinal draw:

Arsenal     v         Manchester City

Brentford v         Newcastle

Everton     v         Manchester United

Stoke City v        Tottenham Hotspur
