Tottenham don’t have long to bounce back after Everton defeat
Tottenham need to move on quickly from their defeat to Everton.
Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t have asked for a much worse start to their 2020/21 Premier League campaign. It’s one thing to lose, but to play as flat as Spurs did on Sunday afternoon is simply unacceptable.
For the first game of the season — led by Jose Mourinho — this was a head-scratching performance. Give credit to Everton. They played well. But this was not a good performance for Spurs.
Maybe it’s a lack of match fitness or simply early-season rust. That’s the hope. Either way, Tottenham don’t have long to put that game to one side and get back on track.
The games are going to come very quickly throughout the month of September. On Thursday night, Tottenham are on the road in Europa League action against Lokomotiv Plovdiv. Three days later, they’re back on the road in the Premier League against Southampton.
Two days later and they will be in League Cup action, again on the road, against either Leyton Orient or Plymouth Argyle.
Win their second qualifying game in the Europa League on Thursday and they’ll have another fixture next Thursday in the third qualifying round, just a couple of days after their first League Cup game.
Three days on, they’ll host Newcastle United in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Mourinho needs to ensure his team forget about Sunday’s result. This isn’t the time to enter each game low on confidence. The games are going to keep coming on all fronts. Tottenham don’t want to slip too far behind in the top-four race, even this early, but they also need to take the cup competitions seriously as Mourinho looks to end the team’s long wait for a trophy.
The loss to Everton was about as disappointing a start as possible, but Tottenham need to quickly move on as the games will keep coming very quickly.
