Giovani Lo Celso could miss Tottenham’s season opener.

Tottenham Hotspur kick off the new league campaign this Sunday against Everton.

But Jose Mourinho’s team could be without one of their star players, Giovani Lo Celso. According to Spurs’ official website, the team will make a “late decision on the fitness” of Lo Celso, who is dealing with a hamstring injury.

It’s usually best to be cautious with hamstring injuries as they can be made worse if a player is rushed back too soon. Unlike many other injuries, it can be very difficult to play through a hamstring injury and the risk of re-injury is there.

That said, we don’t know the severity of the injury and the fact Lo Celso could still play suggests it’s not a major concern.

Lo Celso is going to be a crucial part of Tottenham’s lineup this season. He impressed under Mourinho last season, scoring two goals and making three assists in all competitions. Lo Celso made a slow start after moving to the Premier League last summer, but under Mourinho began to show why Tottenham paid big money to bring him to north London.

Now with a full season of Premier League experience under his belt, the expectation should be for Lo Celso to take the next step this year. He will play an important role in the starting lineup and he will be relied on to make up for a lot of the production Spurs lost by selling Christian Eriksen.

A long season awaits for Tottenham, who are set for a congested schedule as they compete not only in the league, but also the Europa League and domestic competitions.

Spurs will need Lo Celso on all fronts, so the first priority is making sure he’s 100 percent. Hopefully he’ll be back to full strength soon even if he has to sit out of the Everton game.
