Tottenham transfer rumors: Matt Doherty a target for Jose Mourinho
Matt Doherty could be Tottenham Hotspur’s answer at right back.
There has been a lot of uncertainty at the right back position for Tottenham Hotspur this summer. It remains to be seen whether Serge Aurier is still part of Jose Mourinho’s plans or whether he’ll be sold in this transfer window.
With Spurs potentially looking to add a fullback, Wolves’ Matt Doherty could be the answer.
According to Alasdair Gold of football.london, Tottenham are interested in signing Doherty from Wolves this summer.
According to Gold, the only Premier League right back to create more chances than Doherty over the past two seasons is Trent Alexander-Arnold. That’s an impressive statistic.
Whether Wolves would be willing to sell Doherty to Spurs is another question, but he could definitely help Tottenham improve.
Doherty has plenty of Premier League experience having started 67 games in the league for Wolves over the past two seasons. That’s the benefit of signing Doherty over a player with no Premier League experience.
Last season for Wolves, Doherty made 36 Premier League appearances, scoring four goals and assisting three.
Doherty could be a valuable addition to Spurs’ squad and he’s talented enough to be a regular starter at right back. His attacking ability would also help Tottenham down the right side.
Tottenham have made two signings this summer, bringing in central midfielder Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg and goalkeeper Joe Hart. More work is still needed in this transfer window, and ideally before the Premier League kicks off in a couple of weeks.
If Spurs qualify for the Europa League group stage, they will have to play in a big number of games this season. Strengthening the depth at key positions is important.
But Doherty wouldn’t just be a squad player. He could start at right back and would be a good signing for Tottenham.
