It’s no surprise Tottenham’s Serge Aurier wants to finish career at PSG

Serge Aurier‘s admission that he wants to leave Tottenham to finish his career at PSG is as unsurprising as Daniel Levy’s decision to furlough non-playing staff wages.

Aurier is a lot things, but dishonest isn’t one of them. When asked by Canal and Afrique if he wanted to return to PSG, his response was candid, unequivocal:

"“If I can see myself finish my career at PSG? That is even my plan! I would like to finish at PSG. It is before everything else the club of my heart.“I have a feeling of unfinished business. It has been my club since I was a kid, I would go watch matches at the Parc des Princes.“It was a dream for me to come to PSG and for me that dream is not finished. If I was to finish my career at PSG, I would love that.”"

And who can blame him. Though he was born in the Ivory Coast, Aurier grew up in Paris, which became his home in all sense of the word. Paris is where his heart is, so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that he wants to return home to finish his career.

A rash of impulsive, immature and petulant transgressions led to Aurier’s original demise at PSG. His status at the French club became untenable when he called Angel Di Maria a “clown”, aimed a homophobic slur at coach Laurent Blanc, castigated the legendary French gaffer of showing favouritism toward Zlatan Ibrahimovic and, for the pièce de résistance, was arrested for assault in an altercation with a police officer outside of a nightclub.

Now that the enigmatic, erratic Ivorian has calmed down, well sort of, he can once again dream of returning to the club he watched growing up as a boy. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with professing his desire to return.

As unpredictable and erratic as they come, I never conceived of Aurier finishing his career in north London. It’s not like his desire to return to France is hampering his performance. One day Aurier enjoys a stellar outing, while the next will have you pulling your hair out. That’s Serge in a nutshell.

Signing a new right back is on the top of Jose’s transfer list. And Aurier, once Mourinho lands an experienced, bonafide right back, will soon find himself on the chopping block.

Aurier has provided a service for Spurs and nobody should begrudge him of his dream return to PSG. An eventual move back to the French giants will prove beneficial to all parties involved, so long as Spurs obtain the necessary cover at right back beforehand.
