Jose Mourinho’s close friendship with Jorge Mendes could prove decisive in Tottenham’s pursuit of Benfica defender Ruben Dias.

Spurs are keeping close tabs on Dias, who is turning heads for his impressive play at Benfica. Mendes, who is Dias’ agent, is using his expansive contact list to try and find the best suitor for the promising centre back. The 22-year-old has an excellent relationship with Mendes, who is known to be extremely persuasive when he wants to be.

Dias is reportedly keen on a move to England, so there is hope for a move to Hotspur Way. Dias has been at Benfica for 12 years, since he was 10 years old. His next move might prove to be the most important decision of his career, and Mourinho’s relationship with Mendes can only prove advantageous in this scenario.

Transfermarkt has Dias pegged at £35 million, a fee that seems reasonable based on his potential upside and tender age. Dias is on a shortlist of central defenders Tottenham have in their crosshairs. Some of other candidates include: RB Leigzig’s Dayot Upamecano, Brighton’s Ben White and Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake, among a few others.

Spurs, with all of the current uncertainty swirling around, will keep their options open. But Mendes has the inside track in facilitating Spurs’ negotiation for the abundantly talented young Portuguese centre back.

Dias is touted as Benfica’s next club captain. However, there is a high likelihood he’ll be snapped up by one of Europe’s juggernauts long before that happens.
