Nobody impresses in loss to Chelsea: Tottenham player ratings
By Gary Pearson
The 2-1 score flattered Tottenham, who were listless and meek throughout a terribly frustrating London derby.
Defence
Hugo Lloris 5/10
Hugo wasn’t really to blame on either goal. He didn’t make too many saves either, and wasn’t helped much by those in front of him.
Toby Alderweireld 4/10
Toby made a few impressive raking through balls from the back but had a largely frustrating day in the middle of Spurs defence. Surrounded by bundles of defensive colleagues, Toby didn’t really take control.
Japhet Tanganga 4/10
Japhet didn’t do too much wrong. However, he didn’t impact the match either. Hemmed deep for most of the game, he couldn’t showcase anything going forward and was largely responsible for containing Chelsea’s attack.
Jan Vertonghen 2/10
Unfortunately Jan was chasing shadows throughout. Jose has to take some of the blame for starting his aging centre back on such an important occasion. So far off the pace, Jan moves more like molasses every game.
Ben Davies 4/10
Jose should never have started Davies. The Welshman, after months off due to injury, has now played three matches in six days, an absurd workload even for a fully fit player. There’s no excuse for such an egregious lack of judgement.
Davinson Sánchez 4/10
Sánchez did his utmost but still wasn’t good enough. He had a looping headed attempt on goal that troubled slightly Wilfredo Caballero.
Midfield
Harry Winks 4/10
Akin to Tanguy, Harry Winks was too slow in the heart of midfield. He played laterally too often and was dispossessed in dangerous areas.
Tanguy Ndombele 4/10
Tanguy worked his socks off but was too slow and negative in possession. He was definitely in the trenches but didn’t show the quality required for a London Derby.
Giovani Lo Celso 5/10
Giovani was the best of a tragic Spurs midfield. He sprayed the ball with purpose and tackled with menace. He might have been sent off for a studs up challenge and was probably lucky to stay on the pitch.
Forwards
Lucas Moura 5/10
Had Tottenham’s best scoring chances but spurned them. Needs to be more clinical in front of goal, especially in a side who struggles to create chances.
Steven Bergwijn 5/10
Totally isolated up front, Steven Bergwijn did the best he could in a bad situation. He was not set up for success, though.
