Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld endured an inconsistent performance against Aston Villa that saw him score for both teams, but the Belgian deserves ample credit for overcoming a sleep-deprived, chaotic lead up to the match.

Shani, Alderweireld’s wife, had a baby boy on Friday, just two days before Spurs played away match in the midlands. Those who have a child can relate to Alderweireld’s plight. An emotional high mixed with the inability to sleep for what seems like an eternity plays havoc on one’s system.

Somehow the 30-year-old, amongst the frenzied activity that accompanies having a baby, had to find a way to compose himself, get a few winks, travel to the midlands and suit up for a professional football match at one of the world’s highest levels.

It’s no surprise, amidst the strain, stress and duress he endured in the days prior, he experienced a few bumps against a spry, energetic Aston Villa side. The own goal wasn’t entirely his fault, with Hugo Lloris’ indecisiveness leaving his colleague in the lurch. The blustery conditions at Villa Park compounded the challenges Alderweireld was faced with.

Lesser professionals would have folded under the strain Alderweireld overcame. Most players going through Toby’s ordeal probably wouldn’t have suited up for action so quickly after experiencing the exhausting, emotional see-saw that having a baby encompasses.

Toby followed up his own goal by scoring a half volley on the swivel that most strikers would be proud of. Lashing into the roof of the goal, the Belgian let his instincts take over.

He could have done slightly better challenging Bjorn Engels on Villa’s second goal, but overall Alderweireld put in an admiral performance his teammates will thank and respect him for.

The stalwart post-game admitted it wasn’t his best performance, but he should be proud of the way he acquitted himself, overcoming long odds, insomnia and a wide range of emotions to lead his team into battle.
