This rumour, like the player himself, has a lot of legs, and Tottenham should do everything in their power to sign Leicester’s Ben Chilwell during the summer.

Chilwell fits perfectly the bill of a modern left back. He’s quick, versatile, defensively astute and has an incredibly powerful and accurate left foot. And he’s only 23 years old.

The dynamic left back made his breakthrough in 2017/18 when he made his début with the Foxes senior team. He hasn’t looked back since, transforming into one of the most well-rounded full backs in the Premier League.

Transfermarkt has the crafty left back valued at about £42 million, which constitutes a brilliant deal for such a wonderful talent who is still years away from his prime. Rarely injured, Chilwell never misses a beat The quality of his deliveries from set pieces are more consistent, accurate and deadly than Christian Eriksen’s. He rarely fails to get it past the first man from corners; a lot more than we can say for the recently departed Dane.

Most importantly, though, is the defender’s mind for the game. He is positionally sound and understands acutely what it takes to fulfil the expectations of a modern left back. As dangerous going forward as he is stable in defence, Chilwell would represent a game changer for Jose Mourinho and company.

Signing Chilwell would instantaneously put Spurs in a significantly better position to challenge for the title. While he isn’t enough on his own, the addition of another two or three players would provide Tottenham the balance they’ll need to make Liverpool at least glance in their rearview.
