Dele dominates against Southampton: Tottenham player ratings

Defence
Hugo Lloris 6/10
Hugo made some crucial saves including an acrobatic one on Jannik Vestergaard’s second half header. The Frenchman, however, struggled with his control, often parrying into harm’s way. He should have parried away from danger on Saints’ opener and often wasn’t quite decisive enough. While clearly still showing signs of rust, Hugo is still making key saves when his team requires them the most.
Japhet Tanganga 5/10
The youngster was employed at right back, his preferred position. He showed glimpses of brilliance but also struggled coming to terms with the overall pace. His positioning on Saints’ first was a bit questionable. It will take Japhet some time before consistently performing at an elite level.
Toby Alderweireld 7.5/10
Consistently Tottenham’s best defender, Toby yet again marshalled the rearguard well. By no means flawless, Toby didn’t have a lot of support around him. He wasn’t at fault for either Saints goal and needs to get more from his colleagues.
Jan Vertonghen 3.5/10
Toby looked out of place, and not for the first time. While I hope he can show gradual improvement, the massive elephant in the room tends to lead people to think his age is starting to tragically effect his overall play. Slow, lumbered and too often sluggish.
Ryan Sessegnon 7/10
Ryan’s enjoyed his best performance as a Lilywhite. His driving run created Tottenham’s first. Becoming more adventurous in attack, Ryan is starting to showcase the offensive skills Spurs purchased him for. Hopefully it is the start of great things to come.
