Italian football journalist Alfredo Pedulla is reporting that Matías Vecino has agreed terms to join Tottenham Hotspur imminently.

The somewhat surprise admission is currently making its rounds on Twitter. Pedulla, a reputable and reliable Italian journalist, has 192,500 Twitter followers and is known for his connections in Italian football.

Some think Vecino could be part of a swap deal for Christian Eriksen, whose deal with Inter is said to be a matter of when, not if.

Not many people know too much about Vecino. The 28-year-old midfielder joined Inter in 2017 from Fiorentina for a fee of just over £20 million. He has one goal and two assists in 10 Serie A appearances so far this season and prefers to line up deeper in midfield, but isn’t quite a No. 6.

Vecino is strong on both sides but slightly prefers distributing from his right foot. However, his left foot plays an impressive understudy. Vecino is tenacious and aggressive and tackles well. He also has the ability to spread play with accuracy and aplomb. Adept at playing incisive through balls, Vecino is probably sought after by Spurs for this reason more than many others. But he does hold the midfield well and is responsible defensively.

But, and this is a big but, he is relatively unknown in wider football circles. The Uruguayan has a lot of international pedigree, lining up for his country 41 times since his 2016 debut. His age is by no means a setback, as 28-year-old midfielders are usually in the midst of enjoying their best years.

It will be interesting to see how this story develops, and if there’s as much credence to the speculation as many people think.
