The Telegraph is reporting that Gedson Fernandes is going to become a Tottenham player within the next 24 hours or so.

His agent, Jorge Mendes, is in London. He is scheduled to attend Tottenham’s FA Cup replay against Middlesbrough later this evening. But he’s in the capital for a much more important reason than that.

Spurs are going to land the 21-year-old Benfica target, which will be Jose Mourinho’s first signing since joining Tottenham. The loan is going to cost Spurs a comparatively measly £3.8 million. The youngster has fallen out of favour at Benfica, but has bundles of talent. He suffered an injury at the start of the current season and will be looking to try make an impact on Tottenham’s first team.

The jury is still out on whether he will ascend to the senior team immediately, but having the skillful midfielder around is excellent news for a side thirsty for creative players. There are no guarantees this deal will work out, but getting him on loan is a smart, low-risk play from Spurs management team.

He has played at the senior level for Portugal and is highly regarded amongst his peers. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s edition of HQ news, as we dive into Fernandes and what exactly he’s going to offer Spurs.

It’s an exciting prospect, and I can’t wait to see how he takes to the physicality and rigours of the top flight, probably the most difficult league in the world for foreign players to adapt to.
