Tottenham HQ discussed intricately a few months ago the possibility of Gabriel Barbosa coming to Hotspur Way, rumours that are gaining credence as the club searches for relief up front.

Chelsea are also keeping an eye on the Inter Milan man, who recently returned to Italy after a successful loan spell with Flamengo in Brazil. The 23-year-old front man won the Brasileirão Golden Boot, leading his team to the league title. He scored 25 goals in 29 league appearances, taking the competition by storm.

Barbosa was shipped off for brief loan spells at Benfica and former club Santos before landing at Flamengo. He didn’t take to the Serie A well, but wasn’t exactly given a fair kick before being loaned out.

£25 million is a fair price for the physical Brazilian, whose prowess in front of goal cannot be questioned. Whether he’ll be able to adapt to life in the Premier League is another question entirely, but the 23-year-old is definitely worth the moderate financial risk.

Flamengo are also keen to make the signing permanent but cannot afford to pay Inter’s slightly elevated asking price. That leaves Chelsea and Tottenham as the frontrunners to secure his signature.

He’s not quite a A-Grade striker either, which will make the prospect of being Kane’s understudy a slightly easier pill to swallow. If the transfer does go through, Barbosa will have the best part of four months to prove his worth in the first team, an enticing prospect for the Brazilian.

Barbosa is the most well-rounded, capable of all the strikers Spurs are interested in. And the price is fair too, making this rumour one to keep an eye on.
