I’m not sure what it is with Jose Mourinho’s compulsion to employ a central back three, but it’s high time Tottenham veer away from the counterproductive tactic.

An average first half came to life after the interval, as Middlesbrough went a goal to the good in the 50th minute after Spurs failed to draw Ashley Fletcher offside.

Mourinho made a double change shortly thereafter, which had its desired effect. Spurs were the much better side in the dying embers and probably deserved to win. They’ll have to settle for an FA Cup replay at home to decide this tie.

There were some positives to take away from the match, though having to play yet another match isn’t one of them. Here’s how each player performed this afternoon at the Riverside.
