In Mauricio Pochettino’s first press conference as manager of Tottenham in 2014, he promised he would make the fans feel proud of the club.

Through the high’s and low’s of a five-and-a-half year tenure at Spurs, Pochettino and his coaching staff gave their absolute all for the club, guiding Tottenham to a previously unimaginable status amongst Europe’s elite.

While much has been made of the fact that Pochettino was unable to secure a title with Tottenham, the philosophy and togetherness he brought to the club has proven invaluable; he has truly taken Tottenham to the next level.

Arriving with an eclectic squad in 2014, Pochettino transformed a team that was riddled with troublesome egos and misfits.

It took a while for his philosophy to be absorbed, but his belief in youth and togetherness enabled a meteoric progression, with the manager instilling a collective mentality.

His loyalty, faith and belief in the club and his players were the catalyst for what was to come, symbolized by the famous contact photos featuring a smiling, embracing Pochettino.

Pochettino’s ability to bond with his squad provided a platform for united front, and his trust in implementing youth players like Dele Alli, Harry Winks and Eric Dier so quickly epitomized his refreshing aura.

With this philosophy Pochettino brought confidence, and more importantly a sense of purpose. He secured a top four spot in as many consecutive years, competed in a Champions league final and finished above Arsenal, all achievements that seemed far-fetched before his arrival.

His relationship with Daniel Levy was an example of how calm, patient and trusting Pochettino was.

While he was never afforded the transfer budget he desired to transform and refresh his squad over the years, Pochettino never blamed Levy. He just got on with the job in rather adverse conditions.

Levy acknowledged the “warmth and positivity” Pochettino brought to the club, which endeared the Argentine to his squad, and supporters.

Pochettino will be sorely missed among Tottenham faithful, and a new face in our dugout will feel uncomfortable for some time.

It is important to remember the belief, hope and magic that Pochettino and his coaching staff brought to Tottenham.

His promise to make the club feel proud was exceeded, and we can only be grateful to be served by such a top class man, manager, and leader.
