Can Tottenham end 10-match road winless streak at Anfield?

It’s hard to conceive, taking the current climate into consideration, that Tottenham can snatch all three points at Anfield, where Liverpool haven’t tasted defeat in 44 Premier League matches.

The last time Liverpool lost a match at home in the Premier League was against Crystal Palace, a 1-2 defeat, on April 23, 2017. It’s a streak comprised of 34 wins and 10 draws, a truly staggering run of games. Scoring 115 goals, conceding 23 and keeping 26 clean sheets, Liverpool lay claim to the longest undefeated streak in the big five European leagues. Oh, and Sadio Mane hasn’t lost in his 51 matches with the Reds at Anfield.

So, can Spurs, who have been woeful on their travels in the top flight, be the side to demolish Liverpool’s air of invincibility?

Based on current form and either side travelling at entirely different trajectories, logic says no. According to PremierLeague.com, Tottenham are looking for their first away win against a side sitting atop the table in 23 matches.

If you’re unaware of Tottenham’s current away despair, these stats will put things into perspective.

Spurs haven’t won away in the Premier League since beating Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage on January 20, 2019. This unenviable, incomprehensible streak has thus far spanned 10 matches.

Going away to Liverpool is a good case, bad case scenario for Spurs. On the upside, nobody, even the most ardent Tottenham supporter, expects Mauricio Pochettino’s side to disrupt Liverpool’s apple cart.

However, even with most people counting the north London side out before kickoff, Spurs need to make a good account of themselves. Like they did on their last visit to Anfield, Spurs must compete and leave everything on the pitch. Pochettino’s men can ill-afford to be beaten comprehensively by the would-be champions.

With the club enduring their worst form, aside from Tuesday’s masterful Champions League victory, since Mauricio Pochettino took over at the club five years ago, it will be interesting to see which Spurs side shows up. Motivation shouldn’t be a problem, especially considering the opportunity to accomplish something no other team has in the top flight in over two years.

If Spurs were rolling, firing on all cylinders, you’d back them to at least leave Anfield with a share of the spoils.  But based on what we’ve seen in recent weeks, it will take a monumental effort to leave Anfield with all three points.

Hopefully the thrashing of Red Star on Tuesday will inject Spurs with the confidence they’ll need to make the most of their chance to put the Premier League on notice. A good performance against the league leaders will provide a platform for the north London side to springboard off of.

While it’s still early in the campaign, Sunday’s match at Anfield could prove as the turning point in Tottenham’s season. The alternative doesn’t bear thinking about.
