If you thought the closing of the continental transfer deadline would coincide with the temporary end to the Christian Eriksen rumours, you’re sorely mistaken.

Just days after supporters learned that Eriksen will remain in north London for a at least a few more months, a surge of reinvented rumours have resurfaced. Mauricio Pochettino already linked the ongoing Eriksen rumours to a potential dip in his side’s form, not least of which because of the disruption and unease the rhetoric causes behind the scenes.

After seeing sensationalist publications like the Mirror reintroduce and ramp up existing rumours, it’s clear there is no end in sight. In recent days the Mirror, Football-espana and Calciomercato have poured fuel on the Eriksen fire, saying Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan are all probable January destinations for the Dane.

Tottenham supporters, quite frankly, are sick and tired of hearing about such rumours. We’ve listened to them, toiled over them, dissected them, argued and speculated about them.

Well, enough is enough. Eriksen is a Tottenham Hotspur player for another four months, and that’s what the club and supporters need to focus on. Let Daniel Levy and sensationalist media outlets looking for clicks worry about his prospective January transfer.

Pochettino, the players, the supporters, and particularly Eriksen, must focus on the task at hand or see this season quickly run away from them. The same old rumours have become nauseating, most of which designed to unsettle the club or garner necessary views for the aforementioned media outlets.

This seemingly never-ending story cannot be given anymore credence. Eriksen needs to get with the program and commit to Spurs, even if only temporarily. Playing up to his lofty potential is the only way he’s going to eventually get the transfer he desires. Supporters have waited long enough and cannot fathom coming down permanently from the high of making last season’s Champions League final.

The disappointing start to this season could be a reality check, or it may just be a slight bump in an otherwise smooth road ahead. That all depends on how the club moves forward on potentially disruptive, contentious issues like the Eriksen saga. It’s time for Tottenham to prove they’re above reproach, and cannot be derailed by such persistent, nagging, and temporarily inconsequential storylines.
