Tottenham should make swap deal for Alderweireld happen

Tottenham have been active in the transfer market so far this summer.  They should continue to do so, with their eye squarely on the 2019-2020 Premier League title.

Toby Alderweireld will likely leave Tottenham this summer, if only because his minimum release clause was lowered to £25 million.  As the player is of such high quality and the economics of his exit makes sense, the club has received many offers already.  That said, £25 million is too low a fee for a player of his quality.

That is why Tottenham must try and work out a deal for the player that benefits them more than the bare minimum fee they would receive should they let Alderweireld leave for only the £25 million.

Roma, who have already made an offer for him, are one of the clubs that are most interested in.  That offer though is only a measly £18 million.

With the transfer market becoming ever more expensive and clubs needing to respect the wishes of FIFA with FFP, deals are likely to become more complicated.  This would not be a bad thing for Tottenham, as they also have interests in some of Roma’s players.

The most important of those players is Nicolo Zaniolo.  The young Italian midfielder is one of the most celebrated youth players in world football and would fit a very specific need for Tottenham.  Spurs are trying to add more creative energy to their midfield, and given that the Lo Celso deal with Betis is taking longer than expected, this is a good alternative option.

Spurs agreed terms with Lo Celso and his representation but the Andalusian club are refusing to give up on their star just yet. Zaniolo is a different player than Lo Celso but could still be equally as useful to the North London team.

That is why a swap deal that includes Alderweireld plus cash and bonuses for Zaniolo is a perfect solution. Rome are in a bad place financially, providing the exact sort of leverage that Tottenham should capitalize on in order to make something work in their favour.

A player with as much raw talent as Zaniolo is the perfect type of player for Pochettino to manage.

Alderweireld is likely to leave either this summer or force his way out of the team on a free during the next window.  Tottenham are smart enough financially not to let that happen.  The option for Zaniolo is one of the best ones possible for all involved parties.
