Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly agreed to a deal with talented midfield target Giovani Lo Celso.

Giovani Lo Celso and his agent have reportedly agreed to a deal with Tottenham Hotspur for a rumored 150k a week.  This would immediately make the talented midfielder one of the highest paid players in the team and add a very high-level talent to the squad.  This is positive news on many levels because one of the things that Tottenham needed above all else at the end of the last season was to increase the level of talent in the team.  They’re simply not deep enough to compete on all the fronts that they are expected to at this juncture.

One place though to worry is that as we saw with Alexis Sanchez’s arrival at Manchester United the wage structure of a team is a hard thing to balance and does play in heavily to the way a squad is run.  The dynamic in the dressing room shouldn’t be affected by money but we are at the point of understanding that is likely an unrealistic expectation.

With many of Tottenham’s players in recent seasons speaking out about the fact that they feel they are paid an unfair wage given the market that they play in and the level of play that they have now sustained for several years this could be very dangerous.

This makes the addition of Lo Celso then a very interesting proposition.  He is one of the most talented players on the market this summer and would improve Tottenham massively.  That said though one of the things that makes Tottenham such an important and admirable side is the fact that they have managed to achieve all of their recent success through what many people would consider to be the “correct” method. They haven’t bought it, they never overpay and have maintained a solid grasp on their finances the entire time.

What is likely then is that players who are more prone to complain about their financial situation will be moved on as the other more content ones adjust to the new structure.

It should not be seen as a surprise if Rose and Alderweireld are moved on this summer.  Particularly with likely incoming move of Ryan Sessegnon and Davinson Sanchez finding his feet more towards the end of the last season.

Tottenham will need to move towards paying players the wages on offer to Lo Celso if they are going to continue to improve.  At the top level that is how much players are paid.

It simply wouldn’t work to try and add players of that level of talent and try and pay them less than their market value.  Tottenham are not only now swimming with the big fish but they are competing with them.  Paying players the amount that Lo Celso is likely to earn is only the latest step in the clubs evolution towards the elite.
