Tottenham should do everything they can to keep momentum rolling along by signing Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon.

Fulham’s left back turned left winger is one of the best young English talents in years, despite a trying first Premier League season. He has enormous potential and is exactly the sort of investment Tottenham should commit to.  He would benefit enormously from Mauricio Pochettino’s coaching, thus improving the team in the process.

Sessegnon would add breakneck pace, an aspect of Tottenham’s play that, at times, lagged behind last season.  Pace, for the style of play that Pochettino likes to have his teams play, is extremely important.  By providing room and hemming defenders deep, pace on the wing makes life immeasurably easier for central midfielders always looking to a passing outlet.

Tanguy Ndombele will likely benefit most from having Sessegnon overlap on the wing. With a seemingly unlimited passing range, it is important Tottenham make sure Ndombele’s passing options aren’t limited. He will need able-bodied runners providing consistent outlets to get in behind opposing defences, the result of which will set up Harry Kane for more scoring opportunities. Kane should be a regular 30-goal-a-season striker, which, without injuries, he would be anyway, and providing players like Sessegnon will only add to his already impressive goal tally.

As always, one has to consider the business side.

At his tender age, Sessegnon, who recently turned 19, presents wonderful sell-on potential. The Premier League’s global appeal means that teams around the world are always paying close attention to happenings in England.  If Sessegnon becomes one of the best left-backs, a distinct possibility under Pochettino’s guidance, there would be a considerable profit to be made if the youngster was ever to move on.

Tottenham are willing to pay about £25 million for Sessegnon, a fair and reasonable price.  Top wing backs are sold for at least double that valuation. Of course Sessegnon is at an embryonic stage of development, but one has to speculate to accumulate. Just look at Joao Cancelo’s potential fee, or remind yourselves of what Kyle Walker went for a few years ago.

Tottenham should make this deal as soon as possible for a variety of reasons: Momentum, following the Ndombele signing, is on their side. Pochettino also needs to be convinced that the club shares his vision and ambition, which the Ndombele signing helped greatly with. Newcastle just lost their best manager in 20 years because the club didn’t have the sort of ambition he required to move the project forward.

Next. Spurs and Levy need to compromise to get Eriksen deal done. dark

Tottenham, as indicated by bringing Ndombele on board for a club record transfer fee, clearly won’t make the same inexcusable mistake Mike Ashley and the Geordies did.
