Did Tottenham make a bid for Fenerbache midfielder Elif Elmas?
By Gary Pearson
CalcioNapoli24 is reporting today that Tottenham have made a £17 million offer along with exiled Vincent Janssen to Fenerbache for midfielder Elif Elmas.
It’s not the first time this speculation has come to the fore, with talkSport broaching the rumours back in April. Is there any veracity to these rumours amongst all the speculative madness?
While there is a chance these rumours could boil down to nothing more than idle chatter between bored journalists trying to create a stir, Elmas is the type of player Mauricio Pochettino would be keen on signing.
If Pochettino is still thinking long term, Elmas has massive upside, including his silky smooth skill set and tender age. Unsurprisingly young and fledgling, Elmas is a puritan’s footballer. The diminutive youngster, in some circles, is being compared to a young Luka Modric, though in my opinion it’s way too early for such overreaching correlations.
Regardless, the teenager can be molded and contoured as Pochettino sees fit, and has already played a full senior season with one of Turkey’s top sides. Spurs are thin in central midfield, especially in creative terms, giving more credence to the CalcioNapoli24 rumours.
If the rumours are true, the same problem exists for Spurs. Elmas will provide more depth for Tottenham, but won’t offer anything more than a few Carabao Cup appearances in the 2019-20 season. Adding another “player for the future” won’t sit well with Spurs supporters, who are fiendishly gagging for a big-money move that includes either Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, or both.
And who can bloody blame them?
If the veracity of these rumours are confirmed, Spurs won’t be dismayed at the prospect of permanently losing Janssen, who enjoyed a decent loan spell at Fenerbache last season.
While the Macedonian international does look an undeniable talent, he won’t transform Spurs in the immediacy the way partisan supporters want.
Then again, there’s no harm in bolstering your talent pool in the centre of the park, even if he won’t influence the first team for a few years to come.
Thoughts on the potential Fenerbache midfielder joining Spurs?
