3. Toby Alderweireld — Signed July 8, 2015

A giant among men, Toby Alderweireld’s time at Spurs certainly hasn’t come without turmoil. A serious injury kept him out of the team for a lengthy stint during the 2017-18 campaign and contract controversy has tarnished an otherwise magnificent tenure at Hotspur Way.

One of Pochettino’s first signings, Alderweireld, based on skill set alone, is inarguably one of the world’s best centre backs. Pochettino signed the Belgium international from Atletico Madrid.

Forming one of – if not the best – centre back partnerships in world football, the Belgium international is invaluable to the club’s cause. The 30-year-old bounced back from his long-term injury with a superbly steady season. His influence was one of the primary reasons for Spurs’ unlikely run to the Champions League Final.

Now Tottenham need to do everything in their power to extend Alderweireld’s Tottenham career. His uniqueness and athleticism make him an asset that Tottenham need if they’re to challenge for the 2019-20 Premier League title.
