Should Tottenham sign many or few for the same price?

This summer Tottenham Hotspur are going to make an impression in the transfer market.  The question is how.

When approaching the transfer market after a season like the one Tottenham have had things can be interesting.  On the one hand the season has turned out remarkably regardless of what happens in the Champions League final.  On the other hand there’s several contracts that are coming to a close and players had until recent events been voicing their displeasure at their financial situation.  As they say winning does usually fix everything but sometimes a proactive approach to go with that can be an excellent thing.

The question is though is if Tottenham truly are going to spend close to 100-150 million this summer as is rumored to be the case should they do it on many players to try and plug in the quickly appearing holes or should they buy 1-2 legitimate stars to complement the team that they have already?

More from Champions League

The answer is simple. 1-2 players are what Tottenham should be looking to add.  It goes without saying that Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino deserve a great deal of credit for the work they have done so far in putting the team together.  The level of quality is already so high that it’s unlikely players in the 15-30 million pound range would be able to make a vast improvement to it. They have recognized and highly regarded international’s at most positions and even in a couple players who are in competition for the best in Europe in their position.

If it is possible Tottenham should add Ryan Sessegnon, Julian Brandt and Wilfried Zaha.  That’s not too many and it won’t destabilize the team.  I know that’s three as opposed to two but this instance was more a competition between many or a few.  Back to the point however; Tottenham have a great squad already assembled and one of the things that makes it so special is the fact that they have a really great team spirit.

As we saw with Everton two years ago and Fulham this season.  Too many signings is a bad thing. It destabilizes the team and kills the identity of it.  One of the most impressive things about Tottenham this season is the fact that without it being said the team manages to find a way to pull together when things get tough.  They find the extra gear and manage to do what is necessary even if it is quite difficult.  It’s something that makes the team special and others for instance like Manchester United are lacking.

If Tottenham can add a few surefire stars to the team then they’re in a wonderful position.  If they overcomplicate matters however by casting out too wide a net then it won’t be a good thing for anyone.  There are very few players in Europe who could improve this team.  That’s a good thing but now comes the hard part of doing that. In the end the point is to try and win every single game and every single competition you enter and until that point you can improve.  Tottenham have been excellent this season now the work to be even better next time begins.
