Tottenham Transfer Target: Tanguy Ndombele
This summer is going to be a busy one at Tottenham on the transfer front. In this series we will explore potential transfer targets for the North London club.
One of Tottenham’s biggest issues this season was a lack of creativity from deeper in midfield. While the club has plenty of power and defensive nous in the midfield they are incredibly reliant on a piece of magic from the further forward Cristian Eriksen or Dele Alli to make something happen. That is why often at times before his injury Harry Kane was even dropping deeper and deeper to get the ball to try and make something happen which takes him away from his key purpose which is scoring goals.
Tanguy Ndombele could be the answer to this. The Lyon powerhouse is somewhere between N’Golo Kante and Miralem Pjanic. His passing ability is second to none and his defensive intelligence is at the top level as well. If Tottenham added him to the base of the midfield it would expand their field of play as well as solidify the team more in an increasingly difficult Premier League.
Over the course of a year it’s important to try and have as many creative options as possible. The times when teams played 11 starting players and then a couple of substitutes in the same style of football for an entire season are over. Even Manchester City have made several changes to their side over the course of the season because the level of tactical intelligence and scouting and data collection is so high that teams more quickly adjust than ever before.
A player like Ndombele is the solution to this. His skillset and intelligence is so vast that he allows Tottenham to play a variety of formations and lineups and can do multiple jobs. The base of midfield cannot just be about destroying anymore and a player like Ndombele who can do that while also providing and incisive counter attacking threat with his pinpoint passing would be a perfect addition to the side.

A Tottenham midfield that possessed he as well as Eriksen would be able to provide enough ammunition for Harry Kane, Alli and Moura over the course of a season to compete at the top level with Manchester City and Liverpool. Tottenham are the only team in England at the moment with the talent and organization to catch those two. The issue is that those two are also the other teams in along with Juventus and Real Madrid for Ndombele.
