Tottenham Hotspur were granted the wonderful opportunity to consolidate their position in 3rd by Chelsea and Arsenal’s failure to take care of business in their round of matches.

Tottenham should not be in the position that they are in.  They shouldn’t even be close.  At one point they were competing for the title this season.  That though has since fallen away and Tottenham need to deal with the here and now.  They’re on the verge of a Champions League final and at this time are still in the top-4 in England. What they can’t do however is begin to prioritize one over the other.

There are rumors that Tottenham are planning a major rotation for the Premier League match against Brighton today and that would be a mistake.  In the Premier League anybody can beat anybody and Brighton is a good opportunity to get some much needed points and consolidate a top-4 place.  Luckily both Arsenal and Chelsea seem to have combined into one spineless club in the past couple of years and Manchester United are doing their best mid-90’s Inter Milan impression still.

More from Champions League

What Tottenham need to do is make the most of it.  West Ham on Saturday is far enough away that players will be able to recover before then.  Following that Spurs will have to make sure they can get their rest in for Ajax on Tuesday of next week.

Unfortunately Tottenham will not be getting the same help from the Premier League that Ajax appear to be getting from the Dutch League.  In Holland the teams have agreed to suspend a week of matches across the board in order to give Ajax a rest.  That simply will never happen in the Premier League and Tottenham will need to find the strength.

At this point in the season no one is fully rested.  No one is fully healthy.  No one is fully comfortable and happy and Tottenham need to understand that and find a way to get across the line.  They are the better team and are stronger than all the next three teams they are playing. Brighton, West Ham and Ajax are three teams that Tottenham should be beating and Spurs should banish any doubt of that from their minds.  That is what champions do and if they want to be they must as well.
