Tottenham Hotspur are currently under a little bit of pressure to sell Christian Eriksen in order to pay off the debt of their new stadium.

Hopefully Tottenham don’t bend to this pressure.  The new stadium is a success and the team is a success at the moment as well.  Debts can also be paid simply by winning matches and players like Eriksen help clubs win games.  The issue mainly is just how significant the debt that the club took on in order to fund the stadium is and on top of that the fact that it was compounded by the delays.

Tottenham took out a bank financing loan of 400 million pounds in 2017 in order to help fund the stadium.  Then because of the delays and the extra work that they required they had to take out another loan for 237 million pounds.  It is an incredible loan burden for the club to be saddled with.

Daniel Levy is aware of the fact that he could very possibly lose Christian Eriksen for free in a years time.  That said he also knows that he could earn 100 million or more for the Danish star and that could significantly lessen the burden and interest payments of the clubs debt for the new stadium.

That said one of the biggest issues that Tottenham always seem to have is that they keep a very close eye on the bottom line and on the amount of money that is going in and out but too little on the actual football team.  Though football has become a big business that is not the most important thing in the sport.

Tottenham have a wonderful team at the moment and they are playing good football.  It’s important that they respect that and not push Eriksen out the door.  If anything they should be offering him a new contract.  Tottenham are on the verge of a new era.  Chelsea and Arsenal are both weak at the moment.  Spurs are in a historic semi-final and looking stronger than ever.  They should consolidate their position and be signing up all their best players to brand new long term contracts.  They should not be worrying about debts and money now.  Now is the time to press on and chase not only the Champions League but the Premier League too.

Though the club and Levy are feeling a very strong and very real debt burden now is not the time for them to let it get to them.  They should hold fast and find a way to make it work.
