This has not been an easy year for Tottenham and with the new stadium opening it appears there is light at the end of the tunnel but nevertheless an honest account of the situation must be taken.

At one point this year Tottenham were competing for the title.  They were right at the top near Liverpool and Manchester City and yet somehow someway have slipped behind Chelsea in the standings despite the fact that the Blues are doing their most classic rendition of their post 2002 hits and having a meltdown.  Answers need to be found to why Tottenham have somehow managed to shoot themselves in the foot yet again during this portion of the season.

It is a wonderful thing that Spurs are doing well in the Champions League and that the stadium has opened and that they are still in the Champions League places.  That said to become a top level football club.  As the Juventus’, Bayern Munich’s and Barcelona’s of the world are this cannot be considered acceptable.  Daniel Levy must sit down with Mauricio Pochettino and find the solution.

If the players need to undergo a round of psychiatric testing then so be it.  If a medical staff needs to be brought in to examine the players outside of the routines and personal relationships that sometimes complicate the doctor-patient relationship then that must happen.  There is little explanation for what has happened this year and it can’t be accepted as just a run of the mill situation.

More from Champions League

Tottenham’s squad are too good for this.  The supporters deserve more than this.  Frankly the new stadium deserves more than this and it’s important for Tottenham and the members of the team to be proactive in finding a solution.  It simply needs to happen.

Other clubs in football make fun of Tottenham for their inability to concentrate and win trophies.  They make fun of the club for their mental fragility and on the evidence provided this year Tottenham deserve it.  That is exactly why something needs to be done about it.

Nobody should be fired.  It shouldn’t be the sort of fight or flight scenario that happens in West London on a yearly basis at Chelsea.  One of the reasons Tottenham have even risen to this level is that they’ve built productive working relationships within the club.  That said they need to utilize those relationships as opposed to resting on their laurels and accepting mediocrity.

Tottenham can move forward and they must. Greatness is about never accepting the current situation because it can always be better it can always be improved upon.  The incessant pursuit of self improvement is exactly what Tottenham need to be focused on.  That is what champions are made of and that’s what Tottenham should be chasing.   Not a good financial statement or the award for best interior stadium microbrewery.  Trophies, every single one, every single year.  That is the goal.
