To couple with the good news of the new stadium opening Tottenham have done the remarkable business of posting record profits for a football club in a single year.

The record was 106 million pounds and previously held by Liverpool and posted earlier this year.  That is wonderful news for the North London club knowing that they posted that even while paying a substantial fee in order to rent Wembley from the English FA.  If Tottenham can couple that obvious financial strength with their added bonus from the new stadium the team is going to be in impermeable shape moving forward.

The reason the number has surged is that Tottenham were able to draw larger crowds as Wembley is substantially larger than the Old White Hart Lane and they also had one of their most successful years in terms of finish in the league and the amount of success that they have had in the Champions League.

What will be interesting is seeing how the match day revenue is affected by moving to the New White Hart Lane.  It was already substantially increased at Wembley from 19 million to 42.6 and that is already a huge increase.  The difference though is the the New White Hart Lane is already similar in size to Wembley but will have more avenues for economic profit for Tottenham built into the stadium than the national stadium.

This number is probably only the first piece of good news then for Tottenham as the should expect the revenue to continue to grow at the New White Hart Lane.  With the new pubs, shops and other activities that are built into the stadium in the same way that many of the bigger and more corporate money spinning American sports stadiums Tottenham could see an even larger profit in the years to come.

One of the things that though does inflate this number is simply that Tottenham have a peculiarly low salary number for a team performing at their level and that is where the debate is.  At the moment Tottenham are an efficient machine that are performing in the best method for spinning profit at this level.  They probably pay about as little as they can in order to achieve the best results.  That said they will again miss out on the Premier League title.

Is it worth it for the team to spend more and get to the very top knowing the fiscally in the top two positions and at the very top of the sport the numbers are far more inflated?  That is the sort of decision Daniel Levy will need to make soon.  Levy has already demonstrated an impossible to match business nous for a Premier League chairman but he is still behind in regards to winning trophies.
