With the way that the January transfer window went Tottenham Hotspur owe manager Mauricio Pochettino a big summer.

In the modern game both managers and players rarely exhibit the sort of patience, loyalty and understanding that Mauricio Pochettino has show to Tottenham for several seasons.  He is undoubtedly one of the premier managerial talents in world football and is as valuable to Tottenham’s current level of success as the talents of Harry Kane and Dele Alli.  For him not to be treated that way is a tragic mistake on the part of the club and chairman Daniel Levy.

Daniel Levy can make a statement and a form of apology to Pochettino with a big summer spending spree.  It is understandable with all the overages on the stadium that the coffers could be a little sparse at the moment.  That said when the stadium is finally open and the club is again on the sort of financial footing that Levy has been working for years to establish they need to do this.

It should be the sort of statement that acknowledges Spurs’ status in world football has changed with their recent form and their new stadium.  The New White Hart lane deserves to be opened that way.  If I’ve said it once I had said it a thousand times.  Getting both De Ligt and Dolberg from Ajax would be the sort of thing that everyone in Europe would have to pay attention too.  That and those two players would still have good resale value in 4-6 years (don’t worry Mr. Levy mind on the wallet).

The team also needs to be revived. Internal competition breeds a better level of play and there was a point this season where Spurs were competing for the Premier League.  They fell off.  It could have been down to a drop in standards among the team or simply a lack of depth in the squad. Either one of those issues is something that adding a few quality players in the summer would be a perfect solution to.

After those players Sandro Tonali from Italy would be a good addition. The young Pirlo disciple could be a good addition to the squad and add little more creativity from more defensive positions.  Though Eric Dier is a good defensive and holding midfielder his style of passing is often a little too conservative.  Tonali’s classic Italian regista training could add an extra dimension to the attack and defense that could help move Spurs into their final phase.  He is also a young player and perfect for Pochettino to mentor and train while again presenting excellent resale value.
