Newly-signed Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain will not suit up for the Blues when they play Tottenham this evening. The transfer went through on Wednesdsay, January 23 but missed the deadline to have Higuain line up in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri was eager to sign Gonzalo Higuain as his side have been starved for goals recently. Over Chelsea’s past 5 matches, they were held goalless in 3 of them. It seems that strikers Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata are not worthy of keeping a starting job, with neither player scoring in the Premier League since week 13.

That is why Higuain was brought on board- to score goals. He did especially well when in his time in Serie A during his spells with Napoli, Juventus, and AC Milan. Over that time, Higuain scored an impressive 117 goals with 192 appearances.

Fortunately for Tottenham, Higuain will not be eligible to face them in the Carabao Cup. It seems Sarri was eager to have the Argentine take action as soon as possible but the signing went through a little too late.

As it stands, Spurs will mainly have to content with Eden Hazard. This is how they won the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 scoreline. Davinson Sanchez was particularly instrumental in keeping Hazard quiet. If Higuain was eligible to take the field tonight, a victory for Tottenham would have been much less certain.

Still, Chelsea will be able to play Higuain from now in Premier League competition. At the moment, Tottenham are in 3rd place in the League and Chelsea are in 4th. Spurs have a not-so-comfortable lead of 4 points.

After the Carabao Cup clash tonight, the two sides will face each other on the 27th of February. That night we will show first hand how Spurs can handle Higuain and hopefully how

stacks up next to him.
