Daniel Levy Owes Supporters a Better January

Daniel Levy has done a great job at Tottenham.

Between you and I we should be clear on that.  As clear as a crystal.  I think I owe him that given the fact that on this site, as editor, I am generally critical of him.

That said, let’s get into it.

Tottenham Hotspur supporters deserve better than they have been given for several years and it feels as if it is because Mr. Levy has been stuck in the ground.  When I was a child he took over at Spurs.  That’s not to say that I’m old but perhaps I do feel the weight of my mortality more than I did in earlier years.  I still remember when Ledley King came to teach us how to defend at Wormwood Scrubs and what Spurs were like back then and what they are now. The juxtaposition is obvious beyond what the eye can see and the club owes Mr. Levy a great deal of respect for that.

Now I’ve paid my dues, he should do better and he knows that.   There was a time a few weeks ago when Tottenham were in competition for the title.  Not simply the Champions League as they are now.  Not for the top three as they are now.  Not for the top two as they were a couple of weeks ago.  There was a time when Tottenham were competing for the title and you know when that was?  Last summer.

Tottenham had just played one of the most magnificent seasons of football a club could.  It was before I was given the promotion to write in this capacity about this club and yet they did nothing. Daniel Levy had the opportunity to capitalize on his position.  A good position mind you.  A wonderful youth academy.  A loyal, intelligent, pragmatic and honest manager.  A fan base who, and I count many among my dearest friends, are loyal perhaps to the point of even pain. He is in as good a position as a chairman can possibly be.

Then yet he chose not to reward that.

Madness.

The problem is that much like in the Godfather when Michael Corleone needed to pick between his brothers. Daniel Levy is not a wartime consigliere.  He is a peacetime consigliere.  Now with the Premier League up for contest it is time for war.  City are weak in their position and even Liverpool are chasing the title.  Leading for it as of publication!  For the first time in 25 years Manchester United are weak and Chelsea, to my great pain, are now entirely unable to win a title.  Arsenal, I know my audience. Now is the time to pounce.

Surely if even this football journalist and wannabe technical director can see that there is blood in the water then so can Daniel Levy.  Why is he not pouncing?  Yes, it’s true.  I have done research in the world of London construction and MACE construction and this project have cost Tottenham more than the allotted amount of money to build the new stadium.  To argue that would be foolish.

Instead I argue this: Is football about money?

No.  It’s about winning.  It’s about tribes and passion and who you are.  It’s about that feeling in your blood that says you can’t support another club even if you feel you’d like too.  I feel that every single day for instance and then tell myself no and castigate myself for the thought.  Levy for the sake of his Spurs supporters everywhre owes them the run, the chase and the thrill.  He owes them the hunt and the reckless abandon.  The sweat drenched stare at the judge. He owes them tossing in the checkbook and chasing that damn title like James Hunt did the finish line.  Maybe it will cost money!  Perhaps even debt! So be it! Take the honor, grab the glory and live forever in the hearts of those who would celebrate it! That’s the point!

Love is not a rewarding game!  Being the sad cousin of honor there’s no sport in giving in before the finish line simply because the books demand it.  Win the trophies and chase the title.  Perhaps it is too late now but Levy should have spent and chased the title before this moment.

He should have gone to Amstderam and sought out De Jong and Dolberg and then caught the night flight to Barcelona for Malcom.  Three signings in a week!  Do you not deserve that I ask you?

Ask yourself!

What do you want?

What do you deserve from the club you spend countless hours reading, hoping and loving for? Would you rather chase the title 50 million in debt or happily collect the paperwork 4thsilently for free?

Tottenham should have chased the title. It may be too little too late now but the hopefully before the worst is in the lesson at least has been learned.
