Following the loss of Harry Kane for what could be up to two months Tottenham have entered the ever heating up race for Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson.

Most of the stories coming out of Tottenham Hotspur’s camp at the beginning of the transfer window were about how the club would need to sell before they could buy.  Despite the fact that they hadn’t strengthened at all in the summer Tottenham still would not be simply investing in the team.  Now though it appears the shock of Harry Kane’s long term injury is forcing Daniel Levy into action and that is absolutely for the best.

Tottenham are now competing against Chelsea and West Ham in this triumvirate of London clubs that are interested in the English 26 year old forward.

The only issue is that Bournemouth now knowing that their key striker is such an in demand player are seeking an extortionate amount of money. Chelsea are rumored to have begun negotiations at 50 million pounds but Bournemouth are holding out for closer to 75 million.  That is a sum of money that would be a record sum of money for each of the clubs in the chase for the player.

The real question for Tottenham is if it’s worth it. Without Harry Kane for the foreseeable future it’s possible that more damage can be done to Spurs’ campaign than can be undone in a single year.  Is it worth it for Tottenham to overspend on a single player if it keeps them in the Champions League and helps them maybe win the Carabao Cup and end that awful streak of trophy less seasons?  Does Levy see that perhaps the money is paying more for sentiment than logic?

Callum Wilson himself is not worth 75 million pounds or even the more logical 50.  He doesn’t play the same style of football that Tottenham do every week.  He’s not even built the same as Harry Kane so Tottenham would need to adjust to him.  What he is though is a phenomenal player in the mold of Jermain Defoe.  He is excellent in the channels, finishes with confidence and very good in the box.

Tottenham could make this move but at the fee of 75 million pounds would be better off buying another player who fits their long term needs a little bit better.  75 million pounds is 3/4 of Ronaldo money for God’s sake.  It just doesn’t make sense from a logical perspective if Bournemouth are going to hold out for that much money.  The good news is that Levy is an excellent negotiator and the 50 million pound rage is worth it to save Tottenham’s season.
