In regards to Tottenham’s title chances star player and young talent Dele Alli made some shockingly off color comments.

Tottenham’s Dele Alli gave a very honest interview in regards to Spurs’ diminished title chances following their shock loss to Wolves at Wembley.  Many people had begun to view Tottenham Hotspur as title contenders given their very strong form in the face of wavering results from both Liverpool and Manchester City.  The one thing though that people held against the Lillywhites was the relative youth of their team and a to be frank history of categorical failure in important moments.

This is something that Dele Alli appeared to confirm in an interview with The Express. In the interview he touched on many topics and showed exactly why he is viewed as one of the more charismatic and intelligent young men in football today.

He commented:

"“We had been in great form before that and maybe we got a little bit carried away with ourselves. They’re a fantastic team and maybe we just thought we would win the game. But you can’t do that if you want to win things and be a top, top team. You have to be clinical and ruthless in every game and you can’t afford to take your foot off the gas and we all had a look at ourselves after and we know we can’t let that happen.”"

In his interview he did confirm the opinions of many of Tottenham’s critics but that needn’t necessarily be viewed as a bad thing.  The first step in fixing a problem is realizing that it is there.  To live in denial of an issue is to live a lie.

Whether he likes it or not his status as a start player for this resurgent Tottenham team as well as England makes Dele a lightning rod for criticism be that fair or unfair in its judgement.  What he does seem to do though is take it in stride in a way that suggests he is finally growing into the leader that both his club and nation need him to be.

If he can honestly assess the issues with his side as well as he appears to have done then there’s no reason that he can’t help arrest those issues and drag Spurs out on the other side. He is still in his early 20’s and far from the prime of his career.  One can only hope that he uses the obvious intelligence that he has to help move the team and himself forward.

It is however discouraging that manager Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t able to prevent what many people suspected and Dele Alli confirmed.  The only thing that Spurs need to do to compete is remain consistent and mentally strong.  That is the job of the manager to fix and maintain not the star players.

Though he is recognized as one of the obvious managerial talents of this next generation it is important that he get this proverbial monkey off his back.  Tottenham are too talented and too important to the competitiveness of the division and England’s future competitive chances for Pochettino to not make something of this talented and young squad. The first step will be fixing their inability to maintain a consistent mental challenge to complement their obvious physical ones.
