It is rumored that Real Madrid are preparing a January bid for Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen.  Tottenham are offering a new contract in response.

Tottenham have proven to be a fertile hunting ground for Real Madrid in previous years and so it makes sense that the Madrid powerhouse would come searching yet one more time for another of Tottenham’s pass masters.  Christian Eriksen is almost exactly the same sort of player that Luka Modric was when he left Tottenham for Spain.  He is an unbelievable passer of the ball and a highly regarded player.  He may though just as the Croatian did be growing tired of not winning anything.

Christian Eriksen cannot be allowed to leave Tottenham however.  This team is different from those Spurs teams of yesteryear that weren’t even close to winning the league.  It was exciting for them to make the Champions League.  It was exciting for them to play a midweek match against Inter Milan.  It was exciting for them to get to have trips to the continent.

This team though is different.  There’s nothing at all exciting about it.  Now there are expectations.  Spurs are one of the most talented teams in England and one of the better teams left in the Champions League.  It’s true they underperformed at times but now having made it through and that’s all that matters in the end.

Tottenham also are legitimate title contenders.  It’s true they slipped up again recently but they’re still in the hunt with half of the season left to go.  There’s no reason why Liverpool and City couldn’t still drop points.  Each of them still has matches against other members of the big six left on the schedule and it is the Premier League after all.  Leicester won it.  Repeat that.  Leicester. City. Won. It.

The only thing that Tottenham should do if Real Madrid offer anything for Christian Eriksen is turn their noses up and laugh.  Tottenham no longer sit at the children’s table and they don’t need to act like they do.

The door should be closed to Madrid now and the phone off the hook.  Tottenham are a great club to play and are about to enter an even more fruitful phase in a brand new stadium that will put even those great cathedrals they have in Spain in the Nou Camp and Bernabeau to shame.

This all coupled with the fact that Tottenham have actually begun to pay players the going rate for their talent and one can’t see a reason to leave.  It is suggested that Eriksen is going to receive a contract offer for two times his current 70k a week salary.  That would put him at 140k and that’s the amount players in his class are getting paid now.

If it took Real Madrid’s menace to show Levy that he needs to stop underpaying his talent then maybe there is a positive in this whole mess as that was really the last thing holding the club back.  It is too often a place players feel they won’t be contractually respected.  That though is another domino that will fall and exactly the sort of thing that makes Tottenham someplace Eriksen should stay.
