Tottenham involved in possible Alderweireld Meunier swap
Toby Alderweireld has been rumored to be a major piece in PSG swap deal for fellow Belgian defender Thomas Meunier.
Though Tottenham managed to evade one issue in triggering Toby Alderweireld’s contract extension for next year they appear to be thinking ahead. With the Belgian center-back unlikely to sign on a further deal with the Lillywhite’s the perennially business savvy Daniel Levy is eyeing up a swap for another Belgian player with the aim of replacing the outgoing Serge Aurier.
Thomas Meunier who was one of the stars of Belgium’s summer World Cup campaign and a very hot property. Eventually he stayed put in Paris with the Parisians unable to agree a fee for him to any of the clubs who were interested.
That said Tottenham will be doing a lot of complicated business this January and the deal appears to be right up their alley. With the stadium becoming more expensive than originally thought it appears that once again Mauricio Pochettino is going to have to sell before he can buy and even trade when possible. One can only hope that he doesn’t tire of this routine quickly.
With Serge Aurier not fitting into the Tottenham camp as well as was originally hopped and his 80k a week salary weighing heavily on the minds of the board with his minimal contribution Tottenham have developed a plan. They would like to get Aurier out and then a replacement in for him at right-back with minimal cash going out the door.
That makes Alderweireld and his expiring contract a relatively valuable option given the fact that Tottenham have a litany of options at center-back to replace him.
While this seems like good business Tottenham should be wary of rocking the boat so much during a campaign in which they could still stumble into a title challenge with a few haphazard classic Premier League results. There’s no reason to give up at this point. With Alderweireld being one of the dominant personalities in the dressing room and a still a sterling center-back there’s no reason for him to leave at any time this season if other options are available.
One can only hope that Tottenham find a way to give Pochettino more options without depleting his already threadbare squad. The happiness of the Argentine should still be seen as priority number one with Manchester United and Real Madrid lurking like sharks in the water for the Argentine manager.
