Tottenham Hotspur routs Bournemouth in 5-0 Premier League victory
By Zaph Hutson
Tottenham thrash Bournemouth 5-0. The match featured fantastic performances by Heung-Min Son, Christian Eriksen, and the unlikely Kyle Walker-Peters. Spurs now sit at 2nd place in the Premier League.
Early on in the match, it seemed like Bournemouth was going to put up a tough fight. They played a high line and did a decent job in snuffing out Tottenham’s attack. They made a few dangerous plays of their own- almost getting on the board with Stanislas and Brooks.
Soon after the Brooks chance, though, everything changed. The young Walker-Peters found Christian Eriksen who made one of his trademark goals from a few meters outside of the box.
This seemed to wake up Tottenham, with Walker-Peters being highly effective for the rest of the half. Even though he had just made an assist, his defensive prowess was seen in the next goal. This was when he picked off the ball from Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels at the top of the box. Walker-Peters then passed it to Heung-Min Son who put it in.
Another promising Tottenham attack was stopped by Daniels who may have gotten a hand to it. This no-call will be far from Spurs’ minds as only minutes later Walker-Peters found yet another teammate who got on the scoresheet- this time Lucas Moura. At the half time whistle, the score was Tottenham 3, Bournemouth 0.
The first half was an offensive masterclass but the Spurs defense also preformed exquisitely. Another young defender- Juan Foyth- showed that he has vastly improved in recent weeks. He made a formidable team with Toby Alderweireld that kept Callum Wilson quiet.
Hugo Lloris was also great in the first half by stopping attempts by Stanislas and Daniels. He won a clean sheet by the end of the match even with Bournemouth’s barrage of 14 shots.
Bournemouth started the second half better than they did the first. Within the first 10 minutes Wilson almost won a penalty, Foyth was forced to give away a corner, and Stanislas’ goal got taken away for an offsides call. Still, Spurs are up by 3.
Tottenham’s fourth goal came in the form a beautiful Eriksen pass. He played Harry Kane onside in the box with a beautiful lofted effort. This put Kane one-on-one with the keeper and there was no doubt where the ball was ending up.
Kane could have gotten an assist in addition to his goal if Moura was a bit more accurate with his shot in the 70th minute. Still, Son was there for the rebound and Tottenham was up by 5.
Much of the rest of regular time consisted of both teams making substitutions and playing like the contest was over- which it was. Bournemouth did almost get on the board in that time with a close Daniels shot and wild chances by Stanislas and Rico.
This magical night got even better for Spurs fans as Manchester City were defeated by Leicester City. Tottenham rise to 2nd place and now sit 6 points under Liverpool.
If anyone is going to compete with the Reds for the title, it will be Tottenham. Spurs have won their last 5 Premier League matches and will look to keep the streak going against Wolves on Saturday.
