Frenkie De Jong Would be a Perfect January Signing for Tottenham
Tottenham should make a push in January to lure Mauricio Pochettino away from Manchester United’s advances. Frenkie De Jong would be the perfect signing.
They don’t even need him to play for Tottenham this season. There’s no reason that Tottenham couldn’t strike the sort of deal that Liverpool did for Naby Keita in that he continues to play at Ajax until the end of the season and then joins Tottenham in the summer.
The reason for that is simple is this signing would be less about football this season than a statement of intent for Tottenham in the face of the arduous and thankless task of keeping their own manager away from Manchester United.
Signing Frenkie De Jong would be a major coup and show that despite all of this seasons on and off the field troubles that Tottenham really are moving in the right direction. He’s about as Pochettino a player as exists. He’s wonderful in the channels, mobile, defends with character and spirit and can hit a pass on the first touch as well as the second. Currently that Ajax starlet is being chased by none other than Manchester City, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. What Tottenham can offer that the others can’t would be a good place for him to start his career in the most competitive league in the world.
At Manchester City there are few guarantees he’ll get over 20 matches a season and even so he’ll never be a guaranteed starter. At Barcelona that is even truer and then finally there’s just not much appeal to playing for Paris Saint-Germain in a competitive sense. Yes, they will make you very rich and you get to live in Paris which no one is arguing isn’t a wonderful thing. That said the league is the sort of joke that stand-up careers are based on and you’re essentially working for Neymar Co.
Tottenham already have Christian Eriksen and Davinson Sanchez. Both of whom are Ajax students as well and would make a good community for De Jong to join.
Finally is there nothing to be said for being at a club that plays wonderful football, has continuity and appears to be moving in the right direction every single year in the direction of something that could be historic?
Tottenham is the best move for De Jong to make right now. The others are either too simple or too cynical for a player of his quality to make at this point in his career. What Tottenham need to do is their bit and get a plane full of notes over to Amsterdam to get this thing started.
