Ben Davies is serving as an excellent center back in the wake of several injuries. This has been seen in his last two matches for Tottenham.

Spurs have racked up a laundry list of injuries. Few positions have been hit as hard as center back. Starter Jan Vertonghen is still out with a nagging thigh injury and Davinson Sanchez hasn’t been seen in weeks.

Desperate times call for desperate measures and Pochettino improvised. He put Ben Davies- usually a left back- in the center back position. So far, this has paid off beautifully.

When Davies featured as left back, he showed several problems with his play. One of the biggest ones was that he let wingers who he was matched up with have way too much room. This was seen with Willian in the Chelsea game. Even though Willian didn’t score or assist, he could pick out several dangerous crosses and had plenty of room to run.

Davies at left back, though, is a totally different animal. With Alderweireld in support, Davies is able to press attackers and force turnovers. This was seen when he got his first start at the position this year against Burnley.

Burnley only used one or two forwards in their match since they didn’t want to give up a goal of their own. Time and again, Davies was the first defender to meet them. He was never beaten and always had an eye for a threatening pass.

. This was a big match and Davies showed up. His energetic pressing could have remind one of Sissoko’s brilliant form of late. He was a main reason why Aubameyang and Lacazette- who came on late in the game- were kept quiet. This led to a huge clean sheet. In fact, both of his performances at center back were clean sheets.

Pochettino has expressed that his team may be strained if there are more injuries come January. One of the most-talked about transfer moves for Spurs to make is for a center back.

Davies’ performance might change all of that. At 25 years of age, it seems we have a massive bargain right under our noses.
