It was initially hoped that the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium would be finished in September of this year. Now, the date has been pushed past January 13, 2019.

What seemed like a relatively quick project at first continues to drag on. Spurs fans were looking forward to attending all but one home game this season in their new stadium. It is now looking like more than half the season will go by before this happens.

In the most recent update from the club, it was announced that Tottenham’s home match against Manchester United will be played at Wembley. The date of this Premier League game is January 13 of the new year.

This means that the opening day of the stadium could very well be sometime in February. This would put it about half a year after the initial date. Even so, there is still now word on a definite date.

In October, the club released another update and stated the reason for the delay is “possible future unforeseen issues” with the stadium. At least it seems they are true to their word and say they have been “rectifying issues with the critical safety systems.” They say that they will receive a report from contractors on January 7. Perhaps then we will get a concrete date for the opening.

The stadium delays have been a big point of contention for the fans. They have been disappointed after buying tickets to matches they thought they were going to watch at the new Spurs grounds. Instead, they have to go to Wembley stadium which is about 13 miles away from the new grounds. It’s not surprising that the supporters haven’t looked at any match as a home match yet.

Still, there are many supporters that are very optimistic about the stadium. The design seems to be viewed generally positively and the fans are looking forward to the opening with much anticipation.
