This match ended as how most people expected. Southampton were threatening in a few moments but Spurs held control. The result was exactly what Tottenham needed to get its confidence back.

It was obvious that Spurs would score after the first whistle. They kept making long crosses to Trippier, who always found himself close to Southampton’s box.

Before the goal, much of the threat came from Son. At one point, Dier made a short through-ball to Son whose shot just hit the wrong side of the post. A few minutes later, the goal came.

Trippier took a corner and instead of crossing into the box he made a short pass to Eriksen. Kane snuck up past the defense, Eriksen found him at the near post, and Kane tapped the ball in. It looked like a training exercise.

From that point on, Tottenham controlled the game. In the back line, who else but Juan Foyth was the most level-headed defender. He never got beat and was always on the lookout for a pass into the box. Lloris was also fantastic. He turned away shots from Hojbjerg that almost any other keeper would have conceded. With his help, Spurs finished the half 1 up.

Soon after the second half began, Moura made a shot in the box that ricocheted right back to him and scored.

This was followed closely by another goal. This goal was more of a team effort than the second. Trippier chased a through-ball down the right side and pressed the Southampton player who intercepted it. Trippier popped it out to Kane, who made a pristine pass right in front of goal and Son tapped it in.

After this point, Pochettino shored up his defense by trading Moura for Sissoko. Still, Southampton never gave up attacking. The majority of their most promising chances were through Hojbjerg, Cedric, and Redmond. At one point, Davis found himself with only Lloris to beat but he passed away instead of shooting.

Southampton finally got on the board in extra time. Charlie Austin came on with fresh legs and outpaced Dier. Austin finished the play well and the match ended 3-1, robbing Lloris of a clean sheet.

Spurs now sit in 3rd place with 33 points.

Next. Tottenham built of the right stuff. dark
