Spurs keep dream alive with 1-0 win over Inter
Tottenham Hotspur delivered a strong and professional performance against Inter to keep their Champions League dream alive.
Tottenham Hotspur are not a traditional powerhouse in the Champions League. Truth be told they’re not even a non-traditional powerhouse. They’re not a powerhouse in the competition at all. But what they are is alive. On a day when so many other sides crashed out of the competition, Tottenham Hotspur stayed alive and they did it in exactly the sort of fashion they needed to.
Tottenham needed to deliver a strong and professional performance against Inter Milan and they did that exactly. In the previous matchup in this pairing Spurs dominated the match in many ways but then let themselves down. They lost ground in the group in that match at the San Siro against Inter and knew that if they were going to have any chance of going into the later stages of this competition then they were going to need to find a way to gut out a win in this match.
With their first back to back wins in the Champions League since December of 2017 Tottenham managed to do exactly what needed to be done against Inter Milan. Luciano Spaletti can be given a great deal of credit for the character that his team showed and just how stubborn they were. The Nerazzurri refused to go down without a fight but in the end though they were strong and particularly dangerous through Perisic it was the class of Tottenham that won out.
This certainly isn’t your granddad’s Tottenham anymore. With players, the level of Christian Eriksen available to come off the bench Spurs have more quality than they have in decades. This is a team that can win any game in a heartbeat and that’s exactly what they did against Inter on Wednesday evening.

If Tottenham can develop the steel and backbone that they have been lacking in previous seasons there’s a chance they can go the distance in this competition. With Manchester City beginning to build a substantial buffer in the league Tottenham could do well for themselves to target the Champions League. A cup competition and all the intricacies of it offer Tottenham multiple routes to success. In this match, they showed exactly the sort of character necessary to win the whole thing.
In a year where Real Madrid aren’t up to standard and Bayern Munich aren’t excellent either there’s no reason why Spurs can’t make it happen. They’ve got just as much quality as any of the English teams and they should fear no one. If they can couple that with a steely and professional attitude like the one that they showed against Inter there’s not one reason they can’t make it happen.
