Tottenham are rumored to be rivaling Arsenal for out-of-favour Manchester United center-back Eric Bailly.

Tottenham do not need Eric Bailly.  Until recently the Manchester United player was thought of as one of Mourinho’s favorite defenders and had displayed a great deal of quality.  Despite being only 24 he showed a lot of the raw factors that seemed as if he would be a complete Rolls-Royce of a defender for many years to come.  He will still likely achieve that in his career but it should not be at Tottenham.

Of all the things that Tottenham need it is not another central defender.  Between Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld they already have two of the best in Europe.  Then behind them they have Davinson Sanchez who was an already expensive signing for the position.  It would be a waste of Tottenham’s limited funds.

This conclusion has nothing to do with the idea that Eric Bailly is a good player who is going to go on to have a wonderful career as a top-class center-back.  It simply is down to the fact that of all the things Tottenham need an overpriced back-up is not one of them.

A new left-back would be great.  One who can match the level of productivity of Kieran Trippier would be ideal.  Then they need a creative defensive midfielder.  If that player can cover multiple roles not just that of the destroyer but also the regista then Tottenham will be in much better shape.

As of now center-back is even to be considered a position of strength.  Tottenham have not done themselves many favors recently.  Between the stadium and lack of transfer activity the fact that Tottenham are so high up in the league at this point is something of a blessing already.    To then waste the money would be foolish.

This summer, in particular, is going to be something of a defining moment for the club.  It will be the first summer they have with a full season ahead in the new stadium.  They will have to make an impact and make up for lost time.  There’s not one single reason in the world why they can’t spend more money and make a big impact in the new stadium but the first step would be not wasting money on things they don’t need.
