Spurs get most call ups for England vs USA

England will host the U.S. national team at Wembly Stadium tonight. Southgate isn’t extremely confident about the match. One thing is for certain, Tottenham players will be featured.
This is a special match for the Three Lions. Wayne Rooney will get a proper sending-off after his celebrated career for his country. This is also England’s second-to-last game this year- a year where they made it all the way to the semi-finals of the World Cup. They are looking to make a triumphant showing tonight.
Team boss Gareth Southgate has once again added several Spurs to the lineup. In fact, there are more players called up from Tottenham than any other team. This shows Southgate’s high opinion of the team.
The Spurs that have been called up are Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Kane, Kieran Trippier (who for some reason plays much better for country than club), and Harry Winks. You can see the full 28-man squad
.
For his sending-off, Southgate has named Wayne Rooney as captain against the U.S. instead of Kane. This may worry some fans but others are looking at it as a positive sign.
A couple of Spurs will be resting, it seems. This will be a brilliant thing for their Premier League campaign. Their next match is against Chelsea next Saturday. To say this is an important game is an understatement as they clubs are only 1 point apart. Since tonight is only a friendly, England will likely not have their best team starting.
Wayne Rooney should also get some minutes on the pitch. This was Southgate’s own idea, according to him. He said “I don’t think we’ve always been very good at honouring our former players and since I’ve been in charge.” Southgate sees tonight’s match is an “opportunity for everyone to pay tribute” to Rooney. This may seem like Southgate is being sentimental, but he is actually quite a rational coach.
He does not view this game as a given win since he believes England is going through a time of change. He said “We face the USA at a time when it appears they are, like us, rebuilding their senior squad with both countries bringing younger players into their group.”
Even though Kane and Trippier will likely get some rest tonight, there will definitely be other Spurs to support.
