Tottenham begin their Champions League campaign anew against Dutch powerhouse PSV tomorrow. They need to fix some things to put it lightly.

Tottenham should win their match against PSV but more importantly, they have to win it.  Spurs have entirely bottled this Champions League campaign so far to the point that vintner’s across all of France are probably jealous.  It will be hard to recover from dropping their first two matches.  The truth is that they probably won’t.  But if they hope to even keep that chance alive then they have to win against PSV.

Tottenham have a mainly healthy team coming into this match and that’s something that should be a positive note for the club.  Following the world cup and then the historically quiet summer in the transfer window, Tottenham have been aching for a break.  It’s wonderful that Gareth Southgate did Pochettino the favor of resting Harry Kane over the international break. Spurs are more than most clubs in the modern era tied to the fortunes of their prodigal son.  Make no mistake about it Tottenham are in the Harry Kane business and so far this season business has not been good.

On a talent level Tottenham have a lot to be worried about in regards to the Dutch giants.  They’re currently top of the table in Holland by a sizeable five-point margin.  They’re playing wonderful football at the moment and Mark Van Bommel appears to have built a team in his image.  They are intelligent, physical, powerful and they possess some classic Dutch attacking flair.

The truth is it would be great for Tottenham if this game was going to be easier but it won’t be.  PSV are in an equally desperate position to the English giants and goals are going to be scored.  A shootout with multiple goals is to be expected and if Tottenham can put some of their more woeful defending from this season behind them and get back to their strengths then they’ll just nick the win in this one.

More from Champions League

PSV have won five of their last six games and are in good form so Tottenham are going to need to be better.  Unfortunately, this is not the lame duck team that Tottenham could use at the moment.

These are the matches that clubs with the ability to reel in the ambitions Tottenham claim to have are able to win.  Otherwise, they will prove all the doubters right and that would be the hardest pill to swallow.
