Having been deployed as Spurs’ super-sub so far this campaign, Erik Lamela is relishing in the role as a game changer.

All of the midfielder’s appearances in the league have come off the bench, with Lamela making the difference at the end of a match. He’s bagged two goals and an assist to go along with his generally fantastic play.

Against Brighton, the Argentinean entered in the 68′ right as Spurs began to ramp up the attack. Using his trademark pressing ability Lamela worked tirelessly to stifle the Brighton attack, while offensively looking to drive forward and find an option. The increase in pressure allowed for Spurs to regain the match and build towards a second goal.

The reward came in the 77′ through a great Tottenham buildup. Eric Dier played the ball up the field to Lamela who broke forward and sprayed the ball the Danny Rose. It was a carbon copy of Coco’s goal against Manchester United as the cross came in and Lamela’s first time finish found the net.

This added goalscoring has added something to the midfielder’s game as he hasn’t been known for that at Spurs. Known more for his passing and technique to the Tottenham faithful, by chipping in with more goals, Lamela can provide an even bigger threat than normal.

Lamela’s impact was also seen in the match against Inter in the UCL. Once substituted for Harry Winks, Spurs lost their shape and the Italian side was able to grow back into the match, eventually snatching a late winner. On the right side Tottenham lost the press and width from Lamela who had been terrorizing Inter.

The question has been asked if Lamela can be a starter or if he is more suited to the sub role. With Son back in the team Lucas’ rise the attacking spots have gotten more crowded. However, Coco has shown that he can stretch a team’s defense late into a game. With Spurs pacier players tiring the opposition, this creates situations where Lamela can thrive.

Having a player with the ability to change matches late is a key part of any squad and Erik Lamela is perfect in that role for Tottenham. Whether as a starter or not, Lamela is on his way to a big season, and Spurs will need him to match this early intensity to have a successful campaign.
