News broke this morning that Antoine Griezmann’s supposedly safe and sealed deal to Barcelona had fallen through, with the French international deciding to stay loyal to Atletico Madrid and the manager who made him a world-class star; Diego Simeone.

Now I know what you are all thinking, why and how does this effect Tottenham? Well, reports recently also suggested if Griezmann did snub the Catalan giants then our great Dane Christian Eriksen would be seen as their plan b.

Should we be worried? Perhaps, it’s not a surprise that some of Europe’s elite clubs would at some point come hunting in their packs for a player of Eriksen’s quality, even more so after the sublime season he’s just had.

One thing that can lift a bit of that Spurs self-doubt, however, is Daniel Levy and his notoriously tough deal making strategy that makes it hard for even clubs of Barcelona’s statue to sign our top talents.

Nevertheless, it’s an all too familiar feeling losing players we nurtured to their best abilities only to be snapped up when they were ripe and ready- Real Madrid and Gareth Bale we are pointing the finger at you.

To start winning silverware, something we desperately need to do is to keep our best players happy and willing to fight for Pochettino’s cause; Eriksen is undoubtedly on the list of these players we desperately need to keep.

14 goals and 13 assists this campaign highlight the player Eriksen has become since joining Spurs from Ajax; world class. And you only have to look as far as a YouTube highlight reel of his season to see the kind of magic he has been producing week in, week out.

Hopefully, Barcelona’s interest will be matched with a firm “no”, and we’ll get to enjoy another season watching what Eriksen can conjure up with his magical feet.

Something that is very different now, however, to the time when Real Madrid came calling for Gareth Bale is our position as a club, we’re certainly on our way up, and there’s no need to hit the panic button…just yet.
