This week can’t possibly get any better for a Tottenham side who have just signed Davinson Sánchez to a six-year contract extension, keeping him at the North London club through 2024.

Sánchez had a more impactful first season with Tottenham than many supporters anticipated. He made 31 Premier League appearances and played a crucial part in most of Tottenham’s important matches, both domestically and in Europe. He played every minute of Spurs’ Champions League campaign.

Sanchez, with Toby Alderweireld’s imminent departure on the horizon, is an indispensable part of the team, as indicated by the faith Mauricio Pochettino has shown the 21-year-old Colombian.

The club’s record signing, Sanchez was bought from Ajax for £42 million prior to the start of the season. Still quite raw, the Colombian has a lot of maturing to do before he fulfills his potential. But a wonderful debut season in the Premier League has ensured Sanchez will be able to showcase his talent in a leading role in North London for years to come.

The news comes on the back of a wildly advantageous week for Spurs, who yesterday secured Kyle Walker-Peters’ services to the end of 2021. Tottenham secured a top-four spot in last week’s win over Newcastle, influencing greatly the ability for Pochettino to keep his top assets from leaving North London.

Jan Vertonghen voted player of the season

Jan Vertonghen was voted Tottenham’s best player of the season, claiming the club’s top personal honour. The Belgian centre back enters the World Cup after the best season of his already accomplished career. The 31-year-old started 36 of 38 Premier League matches. He marshalled Spurs’ back line, ensuring consistent leadership and stability. He was certainly the most deserving recipient of such a monumental honour.

Next: Tottenham rule North London

The only knock on Sánchez and Vertonghen is their lack of offensive output. Neither centre back scored a goal during the 2017-18 campaign. While neither player is expected to score regularly, the world’s best defenders are known for contributing to their team’s offensive production. Hopefully next year will prove more fruitful for Tottenham’s stout centre back partnership.
