While Spurs are blessed with some of the most electrifying attacking weapons in Europe, it’s their defensive prowess that could prove most important. With the best overall defensive crew in the Premier League, Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sánchez and Ben Davies hold the key to Tottenham’s Champions League aspirations.

At risk of harping too heavily on Spurs’ versatility, Pochettino has the benefit of being able to deploy either two or three centre backs. In addition, with Wanyama back in contention, Eric Dier can slide into the heart of defence if the situation demands it.
