Harry Kane’s reputation was bolstered Friday by the confirmation that his efforts at Tottenham over the course of September earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award.

In truth, there should never have been any doubt that the Tottenham striker was going to receive this honor.

Spurs played four Premier League matches in September, winning matches against Everton, West Ham and Huddersfield by a combined scoreline of 10-2.

Six of those goals, perhaps predictably, came off the boot or head of Kane. He scored twice in each of those aforementioned fixtures, and came close to scoring even more.

Despite not having scored in August, those goals over the past month put Kane only one shy of Romelu Lukaku at the head of the the Premier League leaderboard.

Such a fine run of form makes it seem possible that Kane could indeed compete for his third consecutive Golden Boot, a rare feat in Premier League history.

Though of course the Premier League’s metrics don’t go outside of England’s top division, it’s impossible not to take into account the wider picture here.

Those six Premier League goals were part of 15 total scored by Kane over the same time period. He also scored twice in the 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage opener, then bested himself two weeks later with a hatr-trick on the road at APOEL Nicosia.

Add in the four goals he scored while helping England secure a place in next summer’s World Cup, and Kane’s contribution for club and country approaches legendary status.

Kane’s remarkable September feels like the striker reaching an impossible new level. After scoring seven goals in his final two matches of last season, it felt like Kane was approaching his peak. The past month suggests there still might be a ways to go.

For Tottenham fans, this comes as yet more bittersweet news. While no one can complain about a homegrown talent reaching the absolute heights of the game, it’s becoming clear that Kane might soon outgrow the club.

If there wasn’t enough doubt already with Spurs’ inability to raise their self-imposed salary cap to pay Kane his market rate, rumors this week began to circulate that Real Madrid might come calling.

The terms of that rumored deal are oddly compelling, if a bit outlandish: according to a tail passed on by the Guardian, Real is prepared to offload all of Luka Modrić, Karem Benzema and Gareth Bale to serve as makeweights for a Kane deal. That is three bonafide superstars in exchange for Tottenham’s talisman.

No further proof of Kane’s outstanding rise to football’s elite is required if that rumor can find any traction whatsoever. There’s no telling just how ridiculous it will get if October proves to be anywhere close to as successful as September.
