Harry Kane continues to score at will, his brace helping Spurs win their four consecutive away Premier League match to temporarily close the gap atop the table.

Tottenham stamped their authority on Saturday’s lunchtime fixture early and often, putting the match to bed before the interval. Huddersfield’s high-energy press – effective versus most teams – was easily circumvented by Tottenham’s continuous movement and one-touch passing sequences.

Spurs masterclass was helped on its way by a wayward Jonas Lossl clearance in the ninth minute. Kieran Trippier headed the Dane’s misplaced clearance into Kane’s path, whose acceleration proved far too much for Huddersfield to cope with.

Kane passed his fifth Premier League goal of the season just inside the near post with aplomb, once again displaying his killer instinct.

A sterling passage of one-touch play saw Ben Davies double Tottenham’s lead seven minutes later. Davies was slightly fortunate, as Chris Lowe’s attempted clearance rolled favourably into the Welshman’s path. There was nothing fortunate about his finish, or the build-up play beforehand, though.

A series of sharp, direct one-touch passes negated Huddersfield’s press, making the West Yorkshire side look they were merely chasing shadows.  A moment of pure class from Spurs world beater secured the win for Spurs in the 23rd minute. Kane swivelled on the top of the box to lose his marker with intelligent movement. He followed that up by striking a sweetly hit left-footed shot beyond Lossl’s outstretched finger tips.

The goal came from an innocuous-looking throw-in. But creating something from nothing is yet another trademark of a world-class striker. Spurs’ marksman has scored 13 goals in his last six away Premier League encounters.

Spurs, after 23 minutes, scored as many goals as Huddersfield had conceded in the first six matches of the nascent season.

Huddersfield came close to scoring a first-half consolation goal when Laurent Depoitre’s long-range effort caught the crossbar.

While the second half was a mere formality, there was a distinct, and expected, drop off in tempo from the away side. More organized and disciplined, Huddersfield were better able to maintain their shape while Spurs slightly took their foot off the gas.

By then the match was already put beyond doubt, though. Led by their talisman and leader, the Lilywhites executed a ruthless first half, exploiting Huddersfield’s naïvety.

Moussa Sissoko added insult to injury with a scruffy, deflected finish in injury time. Davies played a lovely little deft pass to the Frenchman, who almost spurned the chance with a poor first touch.

Spurs have won three away matches by a decisive 10-2 margin in the last week, in which Kane filled the net seven times.

I doubt Mauricio Pochettino envisioned a better way for his team to kick off the international break.
